A LONG TERM COMMITMENT
In winter, Varazze wakes up early.
The sea turns serious and suddenly feels bigger than Italy.
People of every age show up.
Teenagers, adults, and the ones who started it here — and never stopped.
Some warm up lying in the open trunk of their cars,
waiting for the right moment to paddle out again.
The water is freezing.
They go in anyway.
Wetsuits, stiff hands, tired shoulders.
Then one wave, and everything makes sense.
This is not the ocean.
But in winter, it doesn’t miss it.
Surfing in Italy isn’t a sport.
It’s a long-term commitment.
